How does a Heat Pump work?
You can think of a Heat Pump as a fully electric Ac system that does not use any natural gas and is extremely efficient. It essentially uses electricity to transfer heat from a cooler area to a warmer area. This means it is “pulling” or “extracting” heat from the outside temperature even when it is cold outside and bringing it into your home to heating or cooling. You can best think of this as acting like a refrigerator but in “reverse” moving heat instead of creating it.
Key points about how a heat pump operates
Refrigerant Cycle:
A fluid called refrigerant moves through your air conditioning system, absorbing the heat when it evaporates in the outdoor unit and releasing heat when it condenses in the indoor unit otherwise known as the “Air Handler”
Compressor:
This is the heart of the system and does all the heavy lifting. The compressor uses electricity to increase the pressure of the refrigerant which raises its temperature.
Heat Exchangers:
These transfers heat from the outdoor air to the refrigerant in) heating mode) and from the indoor air to the refrigerant cycle in (cooling mode)
Reversing Valve:
This is a special element that ONLY heat pumps have. This reverses the flow of refrigerant to switch between heating and cooling.
